Curiosity

They say curiosity killed the cat, but it is a great way to learn.  Therefore, I’ve started this blog for those of you that are curious about some aspect of weather or television.  Use this forum as a place to ask questions.  You can ask about all kinds of weather or how we create weather maps or how we produce the weather or anything like that.  Have you ever wondered what makes a hurricane stronger or weaker?  Maybe, you’ve been curious why I can’t wear bright blue on television.  Anyway, ask away.

I’ll check back here from time to time to see what questions have popped up.  If nothing is asked, then I’ll assume no one is curious anymore.

OK, I’ll be the first.  Why can’t you wear bright blue on TV?

Thank you Jean!

When you see me in front of the weather maps, there are no weather maps there.  I stand in front of a bright blue wall called a chroma key.  When the camera sees me and the bright blue wall, anything bright blue becomes the map on television.  So, if I were to wear a bright blue coat, then I would invisible there.  You would still see my head and neck and hands, but anywhere that was blue would be the weather map.

I have hopes that someday we will go back to a lime green chroma wall and then I could wear bright blue again.  There are some cool ties with blue in them that I have to pass up.

Thanks for your question and for being brave enough to be first!!

This is actually a reference to an old running joke that David Letterman used to make when complaining about oppresive heat or bitter cold in NYC, but I always thought it was an interesting question and you might have an answer.

Where’s the “wind chill” in the summer and where’s the “humidity” in the winter?
